| This was the highlight of the trip I think. Abseiling down 60 meters into a cave filled with glow worms, black water raft down through the water in a wet suit, then rock climbing back up the cave opening, yeah, it was awesome! Being afraid of heights didn’t help, but hey, I’ve done sky-diving before, so how bad can abseiling be. Well, it was pretty scary, for me anyways. They have you in this harness, that is very comfortable for guys, and then say, “let your feet out from under you.” This is so that you can swing out to the opening, as in, there is no more ground, and slowly repel down the rock wall. After the first 20 ft, it was great. Seeing the glow worms wase unreal, they are these tiny little maggots that glow to attract insects, there were thousands of them, about the size of a match stick. You’re 300 ft underground, it is pitch black, and all you can see are these little lights all over the ceiling. The looked like tiny blue stars, and made it bright enough at times to be able to see, a little. Climbing back up the wall proved to be quite difficult as well. They strap you in so you can’t fall, which is nice, then you climb and the rope length gets shorter. So, in a way, they are pulling you up. It was pretty easy till the one part where it was totally straight up, and you’re like, where the heck do I go now?…It was baby steps for me at that point. This is a must for anyone visiting NZ.
