The next afternoon we drove down to Te Anau (“tea” “a” “new”) where we had plans to visit the famous glow worm cave. This trip was much different then the caves I saw up north in Waitomo and included a quaint 30 minute cruise across the lake. There was the most amazing moon rises there that I’ve ever seen, the picture can’t justify it but it was just awesome, the sky was almost purple and the moon came up bright yellow, like a big spot light, it was huge!

The caves themselves were just amazing too, you walk in through a 3 foot opening then it reveals a marvelous rock atrium about 100 ft high with its own waterfall and stream. For this glow worm experience you have to ride in a little boat that they pull you along a rope through complete darkness, that is until you get to where the glow worms are. They are so bright, you could see features of peoples faces event though we were in a pitch black cave. This was Jess’ favorite part of the trip and probably would have been mine to if I hadn’t already seen glow worms in Waitomo.

After the return cruise we ate at the local Moose restaurant where the food was actually quite good and the location was great, overlooking the lake once again. We stayed here and prepared for our final adventure in breath taking Milford Sound.
